 Do you Know the law

A dip into the laws of  the game

know the rules

A situation occurred  last week between two very experienced players, when one player sent his bowl out of turn.  His opponent claimed that it was a dead bowl and could not be replayed, the player who made the error accepted this and lost a bowl. The rule actually states 5.12. If a player delivers any bowl out of turn it must be returned to be played in its proper turn. This incident highlighted to me how important it is to know the rules, to this end I will make this a regular feature of the weekly news. You can find The Laws of the Game of Crown Green Bowls 2025 at the BCGBA web site.

In one of the highlights of the week the D team took on the C team.

Wednesday night Buchanan D went into battle with the C team. Both teams had manning problems, over the weekend D team captain Billy Smart was aware he was missing four players, one due to a back injury, two on holiday abroad and one due to a work commitment, leaving the team with only seven players.. Fortunately Jonny Quinn managed to get time off to play in this important game. unfortunately at 1755hrs on Wednesday night Billy received a phone call advising him that  John Castley had been in an  accident and was no longer available. John is OK and will return next week. The D team went into the affray a man short. The C team had its own problems with four of its star players unavailable. Two on holiday, Mick Williams injured and their inspiring leader George Etchells  unavailable due to illness. They however were able to field a full team. The first game on the card was a closely fought affair between Gerard Grogan and Steve Kerruish with Gerard the D team player coming out on top 21 - 19.  The next three games all went the D teams way. Jonny Quinn beat Joan Goodwin 21 - 18, both players had lead at some point in the game. In game three Billy Grogan was in the lead from the start. Ian Dean was all ways within touching distance but failed to close the gap with Billy running out 21 - 17. Billy Smarts game against Edwina Patterson was closer than the score line shows with Edwina only managing to score one point in the ends she won, were as Billy got a number of two point ends coming out a 21- 11  victor. At the half way point with the 21 points  conceded by the D team for the missing player the C team lead the aggregate by two points. Game number five had the look of a C team come back as Tony Downes at the tenth end had taken an 11 - 1  lead over Barry Hopper . By end twenty Barry had taken the lead 13 - 12. From there on in he never looked back winning his game 21 - 16 and putting the D team 3 points ahead on the aggregate. In game six  Bernie McArthur got off to a strong start over his opponent Emma Willian and held a firm lead through out the game with a 21 - 12 victory putting the D team 15 points ahead. The final game required top bowler and very experience player Jack Mortimer to keep his novice opponent Julie McArthur down to single figures, by the twelfth end Julie had hit double figures and lead Jack 10 - 8  ensuring the D team won the aggregate, Jack eventually  came off 21 - 12 victor. The final result was D team 138 and 8 points - C team 135 and 2 points. Player of the match goes to all the D team players for a terrific performance against all the odds.
